Probably a lesser-known case is that of Gordon Hay. In August 1957 the body of a young woman was found. She was found beaten and strangled with bite marks on her breast. Impressions of the bite mark were taken. Over 3000 people were interviewed regarding the murder, and soon the long list of suspects was narrowed down to 29 people. The 29 people, all of whom were young men from a nearby detention centre, willingly gave their teeth impressions. Though one set of teeth did come close, they were all eliminated. The investigators were baffled, as they were quite sure the murderer was one of those at the detention centre. However soon the puzzle was solved. Someone suggested turning the impression upside down and comparing it, as the investigators had assumed the assailant’s head was the same way as the head of the girl. They compared the sets again and found a perfect match.

The bite marks belonged to a 17-year-old youth, Gordon Hay. He apparently did meet the victim on the day of her murder, and his teeth mark were an exact match, so he was convicted of the murder.
